Youth Crew for Round Ireland

A Wicklow-based youth team has unveiled its campaign for the Round Ireland race, kicking off from their home town in June. The 15-strong Pride of Wicklow includes a core group of 10 Wicklow sailors.

The crew have chartered a Corby 45 from Windward Sailing in the UK (built in 1998, and won Round UK & Ireland in 2000) and will take delivery of the boat on June 4, two weeks ahead of the race.

With a funding target of €30,000, the team has already raised nearly €15,000, but are still in the hunt for a title sponsor. Donations as small as €1 are beign accepted through the team's website. In their own words: "We are actively seeking a main title sponsor, But are also asking you the People of Wicklow to support this boat, and take a share in it so to speak by donating to our war chest."

Coverage agreements are already in place witn East Coast FM and The Wicklow People, who will be backing their campaign.

The team website is at www.prideofwicklow.com and you can also follow developments on their Twitter and Facebook pages.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
