A new Irish maritime initiative inspired by explorer Ernest Shackleton will be launched in Dún Laoghaire Harbour this May.
The Atlantic Shackleton Global Foundation has announced the official launch of the Spirit of Shackleton at Dún Laoghaire Plaza on 15 May 2026.
The event will be formally opened by the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly. Organisers say it marks a milestone for Ireland’s maritime, scientific and youth development sectors.
A ceremonial performance by the Irish Army Band will feature at the launch. The Foundation said the performance reflects “resilience, unity and service” linked to Shackleton’s legacy.
At the centre of the project is the Spirit of Shackleton, a 70-foot ocean-going former Clipper Race yacht. It is designed as a platform for ocean science, youth leadership and global expeditions.
The Foundation said the vessel will support research partnerships and training programmes. It will operate as a “living classroom” aimed at inspiring future leaders.
