The Northern Ireland Sailing Team has been named for the 2024/25 season.
It includes 34 sailors across four boat classes and at various stages of development, ranging from those competing in junior classes such as the Topper to senior athletes with Olympic aspirations in the ILCA 7 or 49erFX.
While RYA Northern Ireland has always run development programmes for performance sailors, this is the first time an official ‘NI Sailing Team’ has existed, on the foot of RYANI’s Navigating the Future strategy.
At Olympic level, Northern Ireland sailors represent either Irish Sailing or British Sailing, but only a small number of sailors will make it to that stage.
Ultimately, all sailors in RYANI performance programmes sail for Northern Ireland. “We want to create a sense of ‘team’ and ‘pride’ for NI sailors and their home clubs,” RYANI says.
