Margaret Tait has been named the ‘Pioneer in Sport’ at the 2025 Scottish Women in Sport Awards in Glasgow.
The 77-year-old was recognised for more than 40 years of commitment to Scottish sailing and her long service at Port Edgar Yacht Club.
Tait was among the first women to work in race management and later became a familiar mentor on committee boats in South Queensferry.
“I certainly didn’t expect it. I feel honoured,” she said.
She added that she had to wait until university to start sailing. “I went home to show the men that women could sail.”
Her message to others was clear. “Don’t stop sailing, you only get old when you stop.”
RYA Scotland chief executive Finlo Cottier said her award was “fantastic to see”, noting her “invaluable impact” at the club.
He said Tait supported new members, shared her knowledge and encouraged more women and girls into the sport.
Tait has also inspired her granddaughter Abby, now a qualified dinghy and powerboat instructor.
The award follows an RYA Scotland Impact Award presented to Tait last year.
Tait said the sailing community kept her involved. “I love the interaction with all the people that I meet… they’re a cut-throat lot on the water, but the best of friends off the water.”
