Cork boatbuilder Safehaven Marine has launched Ederra 8, a new 18-metre Interceptor 60 pilot boat for the MVD Pilots Association in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The new vessel is the third Ederra built by Safehaven for the Uruguayan pilots, following the two Interceptor 48s Ederra 6 and Ederra 7, delivered in 2022. Afloat reported at the time on Ederra 7 undergoing rough-weather trials off Roches Point before shipment to South America.

Including Belgrano, supplied in 2020, Ederra 8 is the fourth Safehaven pilot boat supplied to Montevideo.

More Than 30 Knots

Safehaven says the Interceptor 60 is its fastest pilot boat built to date, with twin Volvo 750hp engines providing an operational speed of more than 30 knots.

The builder says Ederra 8 is also economical for an 18-metre pilot boat, consuming 168 litres of fuel per hour at 24 knots.

The latest launch continues Safehaven's export programme from its Cork base. Afloat reported earlier this year that Safehaven had pilot boats under construction for Montevideo, A Coruña and Blyth, alongside a second Interceptor 48 order for Miami.

Cork Harbour Sea Trials

Ederra 8 has been pictured by Robert Bateman undergoing sea trials in lively conditions off Cork Harbour, with the 18-metre vessel powering through the swell.

Safehaven regularly puts its new pilot craft through their paces in these waters. Afloat reported on the Interceptor 48 Northeast Pilot III undergoing trials near the harbour entrance during Storm Bram in December 2025.
