Irish Coast Guard’s Rescue 118 helicopter has flown a generator to the Aran island of Inis Meáin, following a break in power and water supplies as a result of Storm Éowyn.
Power has been restored to many homes on the three islands, but there are still some without power or water.
The operation had to be carried out by CHC, rather than Bristow which has taken over at Shannon, as CHC Ireland has approval for helicopter external sling load operations.
CHC Ireland director of operations Rob Tatten said that the Rescue 118 Sligo team that includes pilots, technical crew and engineers were “super proud to help out our fellow neighbours”.
“They continually say no day is ever the same in helicopter search and rescue, this was definitely a box to tick off before the Sikorsky S92 departs Sligo on the 14th February,” Tatten posted on social media.
As the Irish Examiner reports, Ireland has lodged an emergency request for help from the EU for high-capacity mobile generators.
ESB Networks, which has crews out in the worst affected areas and restored power to many thousands over the weekend, confirmed that about 278,000 people could be without power until Friday.
The Government made a formal request on Saturday for help through the EU’s disaster response mechanism, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
It also announced initiation of a network of emergency response hubs to provide basic needs .
The EU’s mechanism was activated for Spain last year in response to the flooding disaster in Valencia in which over 220 people died.
Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mullooly - who made contact on Saturday with European commissioner Hadja Lahbib, holding responsibility for preparedness and crisis management — welcomed the request, but said it should have been made sooner.
He said Ms Lahbib had confirmed that her emergency response coordination centre (ERCC) had been in contact with the Irish civil protection counterparts since January 22nd, two days before Storm Eowyn.
