The newly constructed Westport Coast Guard station is due to be opened in Mayo on Saturday by Minister of State Seán Canney.
Canney holds special responsibility for the Irish Coast Guard at the Department of Transport.
The purpose-built Westport Coast Guard Station marks “a significant milestone in the ongoing development of Ireland’s national search and rescue infrastructure”, the department says.
Tendering for the works at Westport was undertaken by the Office of Public Works in August 2023, following approval from the department.
The contract was awarded to MVS Construction Ltd in late January 2024, and the contract sum was €4,619,817.66 ex. VAT.
Last year, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure Kevin “Boxer” Moran told the Dáil that the total project cost, including VAT, contingency of 7.5%, Per Cent for Art, surveys and reports and fees (including Planning, Building Control and Fire Safety fees), is expected to be €6.879m.
He said the site was owned by Mayo County Council and transferred to the Office of Public Works at a nominal fee.
He said the station was “being built on reclaimed land, necessitating significant additional costs not typically incurred at other sites”.
