The long-awaited replacement coastguard station at Kilmore Quay has encountered another setback, with the Irish Independent reporting that councillors were told a request for an update from the Office of Public Works (OPW) had not been sent.
According to the report by Simon Bourke, the issue arose at the July meeting of Wexford County Council's Rosslare Municipal District, where councillors expressed frustration over the lack of progress on the project after more than a decade.
Councillor Ger Carthy said he had expected correspondence to have been sent to the OPW following a request made at the June meeting.
"I presume there's been correspondence sent to the OPW on this," he said. "I've had the Minister for the OPW, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, asking me about this."
Acting District Manager Edwina Colfer confirmed there was no update and acknowledged that the Rosslare Municipal District had yet to contact the OPW.
"We have no update but we'll follow it up," she said.
The Irish Independent also reports that Councillor Jim Codd said local contacts had indicated that a suitable site had already been identified.
"A site in the ownership of WCC was identified and was considered suitable for the new station," he said.
"I understand we're back to square one and are looking for a site again, but one has already been identified. We should move with that site rather than start over."
The latest development means the wait for a replacement coastguard station in the south Wexford fishing village is expected to continue for at least another two months while councillors await a formal response from the OPW.
