A Wexford councillor has called on the director of the Irish Coastguard to address what he calls “horrendous conditions” in which Irish Coast Guard Kilmore Quay volunteers have to work.
Cllr Ger Carthy says the director should attend the October meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) as efforts continue to find a new station for Kilmore Quay.
As The Irish Independent reports, Cllr Carthy has also criticised the junior minister responsible.
“They’re operating in horrendous conditions, it’s an embarrassment on the State and it’s being allowed to continue under Transport Minister of State Seán Canney,” he told the September meeting of the RMD.
“Under no circumstances should any voluntary organisation which gives up its time to save lives at sea be operating out of station like that.”
Cllr Jim Codd agreed, and said that in spite of the conditions at their station the Kilmore Quay coastguard unit did “phenomenal work” during peak season.
The newspaper reports that new district manager Anne Marie Laffan had been in contact with the Office of Public Works (OPW) regarding a potential upgrade of the station.
She received a response which stated that “the progression of a new purpose built coastguard station for Kilmore Quay is a matter for the Department of Transport, under whose auspices the coastguard operates”.
Afloat has previously reported on the work of the Kilmore Quay Coast Guard unit, whose volunteers respond to coastal and marine incidents off the south Wexford coast.
