Wicklow RNLI Rescues Three Fishermen Off Coast

Wicklow RNLI rescued three fishermen on Saturday morning, 22 March. Their vessel was trapped in ropes off the Wicklow coast.

The all-weather lifeboat RNLB Bridie O’Shea launched at 09:00. Under Coxswain Alan Goucher, it reached the fishing vessel 25 minutes later, about nine miles northeast of Wicklow harbour. The conditions were favourable, with light winds and good visibility.

Coxswain Goucher found that the propeller was fouled by ropes, jamming the rudder. Unable to navigate back to shore, the decision was made to tow the vessel to safety. A towline was established, and they headed for Wicklow Harbour.

The 10-metre fishing vessel safely arrived at the south quay just before 11:30. All three fishermen were brought safely ashore.

Wicklow RNLI Press Officer Tommy Dover noted, “We give a special mention to trainee Kelly Byrne, who went to sea today on her first official ‘Shout’.”

Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) in Ireland Information

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity to save lives at sea in the waters of UK and Ireland. Funded principally by legacies and donations, the RNLI operates a fleet of lifeboats, crewed by volunteers, based at a range of coastal and inland waters stations. Famous Irish Lifeboat Rescues

Spending almost 50 hours at sea, the lifeboat stood by the drifting lightship until the proximity to the Daunt Rock forced the coxswain to get alongside and successfully rescue the lightship's crew.

32 Irish lifeboat crew have been lost in rescue missions, including the 15 crew of the Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire) lifeboat which capsized while attempting to rescue the crew of the SS Palme on Christmas Eve 1895.
