The UK's Cruising Association (CA) and Inland Waterways Association (IWA) have published new practical guidance for boat owners considering installing lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄ or LFP) service batteries.
The two organisations warn that switching from conventional lead-acid batteries to LFP technology should not be treated as a straightforward “drop-in” replacement. Their guidance follows technical work by the CA’s Regulatory & Technical Services Group (RATS) and the IWA’s Sustainable Boat Group.
It concludes that a safe, successful conversion requires careful planning and appropriate system design, and that upgrades to a boat’s existing electrical installation may be required.
Planning Before Making the Switch
LFP batteries are increasingly being considered by boat owners seeking alternatives to traditional lead-acid service batteries, but the CA and IWA say owners should understand the wider electrical implications before undertaking a conversion.
The newly published guidance outlines technical considerations associated with installing LFP batteries and is intended to help owners assess what may need to change elsewhere in their onboard electrical systems.
It also includes a practical checklist for owners to use when discussing a proposed installation with a professional or planning their own conversion.
The organisations say the joint initiative is intended to provide the boating community with clear, impartial information while encouraging the safe adoption of lithium battery technology.
