Black Star Sailing Team made the perfect start to the 44Cup Marstrand with two race wins on the opening day, but the leaderboard remains finely balanced after three races in Sweden. Christian Zuerrer's Swiss team, with New Zealand tactician Cameron Dunn, claimed the opening two victories in ideal conditions on the Kattegat. A steady 10-12 knot northwesterly and temperatures in the low 20s provided a near-perfect start to the four-day regatta.

Black Star found success on the left side of the opening beats in both races before converting strong starts into convincing wins. "It was a good day for us – we've never had two wins in a row," said Zuerrer. "I'm pretty happy with the speed of the boat."

Dunn credited both tactics and boat speed. "In the first race we got a nice start down the pin. Everyone was fighting for the right, but we preferred the left and there was a strong left-hand bend up the beat," he said. "The boat was going really well. It felt comfortable and fast." Black Star's perfect record ended in the third race after becoming trapped in traffic. They recovered to finish seventh and remain tied for the overall lead.

Home team Artemis Racing also enjoyed a consistent day, posting results of 3-2-4.

Event host Torbjörn Törnqvist praised the opening conditions. "Conditions were fantastic. It was nice to see the sun coming out and escaping the heat from the continent. Racing was good, very tight," he said.

The final race belonged to Sweden's GeMera Racing, which claimed victory despite sailing the final leg with a damaged spinnaker. "We were very happy with that last race," said tactician Francesco Bruni. "The drop line got a knot in it and we had to cut it during the hoist. Luckily we had a big enough lead."

Late Charge — GeMera Racing recovered from average starts to win the final race of the opening day at the 44Cup Marstrand, leaving four teams separated by just one point at the top of the leaderboard. After three races, Black Star Sailing Team and Artemis Racing share the lead on nine points. GeMera Racing and Team Charisma sit just one point behind on 10, setting up a closely contested second day. A forecast shift to a southerly breeze is expected to produce more variable conditions when racing resumes on Friday.

About RC44

The RC44 is a light displacement, high performance one-design racing yacht competing in the 44Cup, a five-stop international racing tour. Co-designed by five-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts with naval architect Andrej Justin, the RC44 boats are strictly identical in terms of construction, shape of hull, appendages and weight/weight distribution, as well as a 50-50 split between amateurs and professionals in each eight-person crew. With everything, from the keel to the tip of the mast, made entirely from carbon, and with a powerful sail plan, the RC44 is rapid downwind, commanding upwind and performs exceptionally in both light winds and heavier breezes. The RC44’s innovative and technical design present an exciting new hybrid sailing challenge, with the crews expected to hike like a sports boat and grind as you would on a keelboat.
