Emirates Team New Zealand has added Serena Woodall and Helena Sanderson to its sailing squad ahead of the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup. Both sailors join full-time after a trial period and will support the team’s Women’s America’s Cup campaign.
Woodall, who began sailing on Waiheke Island, progressed through youth training and match racing programmes. She described the move as significant. “Being brought into the sailing team… is a pretty surreal experience,” she said.
Sanderson, from the Bay of Islands, has experience in foiling classes, including Nacra and Waszp. She said joining the team was a long-held ambition. “I’m really excited to be a part of the team,” she said.
The pair will focus on developing skills in the AC40 foiling monohull while contributing to the wider squad.
Sailing Team Manager Andy Maloney said both had adapted quickly. “They have both quickly soaked up the team's knowledge,” he said.
Chief Operating Officer Kevin Shoebridge said the appointments reflect broader development pathways. “This illustrates the development of the pathways… are really coming to fruition,” he said.
The additions form part of preparations for the next America’s Cup cycle, with a focus on integrating emerging talent.
