A crew member has been injured aboard the yacht Walross 4 during the RORC Transatlantic Race.

Race organisers were alerted to the incident on Monday, 19 January, while the yacht was mid-Atlantic en route from Lanzarote to Antigua.

The Nissen 56 yacht, owned by ASV of Berlin, was around 1,500 nautical miles into the crossing when the crew member was rendered unconscious following an onboard accident.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) Race Committee immediately contacted emergency authorities.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Delgada, responsible for the Azores region, took charge of the operation.

A nearby commercial vessel was diverted and successfully recovered the injured sailor from Walross 4.

The ship is now heading towards the Cape Verde Islands.

A helicopter evacuation to the Azores is planned when conditions and range allow, where further medical treatment will be provided.

The sailor’s next of kin has been informed.

RORC confirmed it remains in direct contact with Walross 4 and is coordinating closely with officials at ASV Yacht Club in Germany.

Walross 4 is one of 21 yachts competing in the 12th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race.

All entries must comply with World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations 2025, Category 1, along with RORC prescriptions and the Racing Rules of Sailing.
