The former Rambler 88, with which George David established a massive Round Ireland Monohull Record in the 2016 Round Ireland Race from Wicklow, has continued her winning ways as Bryon Ehrhart’s Lucky.
Twenty-four hours into the 1250-miles Sydney-Auckland Race 2025, she now has a substantial on-water lead from course record-holder, the Santa Cruz 72 Antipodes, and the 2025 CT winner, former Wallaby player Michael Martin’s TP 52 Frantic, whose crew includes ex-Pat Clontarf sailor Trevor Smyth.
Sorting an engine problem in New Zealand had delayed Lucky’s arrival in Sydney until the last moment. But with four times America’s Cup winner Brad Butterworth in charge, everything was in smooth order as the big silver bullet cleared the start line and was soon literally putting a horizon job on the opposition. Nevertheless, the moody Tasman Sea, and the final coastal approaches to the finish 1,250 miles away, can make his recent addition to the calendar a continuously changing challenge.
