Irish offshore sailor Pamela Lee faces one of the strongest Class40 line-ups ever assembled for the Round Ireland Yacht Race when the 704-nautical-mile race starts from Wicklow on Saturday.
Lee arrives at the start following a top-ten finish in the recent CIC Normandy Channel Race and will compete against a fleet that includes leading international Class40 sailors Luca Rosetti, Robin Follin, Pep Costa and Djemila Tassin.
"This is exactly the test I need," Lee said. "You don't find out what you're made of by racing against people you can beat."
The Round Ireland course is expected to take between three and six days and will provide a significant examination of offshore racing skills, weather strategy and endurance.
Lee will skipper her Class40 with French sailors Hubert Marachel and Estelle Grecke, while Cynthia Rodriguez will sail as onboard reporter.
The race forms part of Lee's preparation programme for the Route du Rhum transatlantic race in November, where she is aiming to become the first Irish sailor to compete in the solo event.
