Tuesday 15:15hrs - There’s been sparkling sailing off Ireland’s northwest coast tiday to brighten life up for a fleet shaking off the ill-effects of prolonged calm. But unfortunately the current stream of extremely humid air may mean that fog will be grabbing the Round Ireland Racers before the day is out.
Meanwhile the Botin 56 Khumbu has benefitted so much from being well ahead of the fleet and getting into a more lively wind pattern from the southwest and west that she has rocketed up the IRC placings, and is currently rounding Malin Head with an enormous lead on the water, and a very creditable 5th place on IRC corrected.

Making good speed off the mouth of Broadhaven I Northwest Mayo, and nicely on track for Tory, is Gery Trentesaux’s Courrier Pogo. The gallant senior French skipper continues to hold the IRC lead, but still firmly in second is Howth’s Johnny Murphy with the J/109 Outrajeous, passing Achill Head with 9 knots on the clock and all well with the world.

SPIRIT OF SHACKLETON ON THE MOVE
The decent sailing breeze is indicated by the fact that the heftiest boat in the fleet, the Atlantic Shackleton Trust’s 70ft cutter Spirit of Shackleton, is bustling along at 11 knots northwest of Inishbofin and having a lovely time, thank you. Spirit of Shackleton may have twice taken on the challenge of racing through the Great Southern Ocean in her days as a Clipper 70, but when stubbornly light summer weather set in on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, it didn’t suit her at all.
At the moment the overall IRC placings after three days of racing are the clearest indication of the performance pattern, and the top six are 1st Courrier Pogo, 2nd Outrajeous, 3rd Sunrise (Tom Kneen), 4th Bellino (Rob Craigie), 5th Khumbu, and 6th The Big Picture (Mike Evans.
