Sovereign's Cup Announces Prix d'Elegance Trophy
Kinsale Yacht Club was buzzing tonight with news of a new Sovereign's Cup trophy that will be presented this week writes Claire Bateman. The high wind and driving rain of the day had given way to evening sunlight which created a great atmosphere of conviviality with every one of the large gathering present on this mid-summer's day in top form and looking forward to a great week of sailing. The biennial Sovereign's Cup is the largest yacht racing event on the south coast this year. The event takes place this week from 22nd-25th June in the excellent sailing conditions of Kinsale Harbour.

The opening reception of the Sovereign's Cup was presided over by KYC Commodore, Alice Kingston, who welcomed everyone in her usual gracious style.

"We are delighted to welcome over 100 boats to Kinsale from all over Ireland and the UK," she said. "We are looking forward to four days of fantastic racing as there are good winds forecast, as well as meeting both new and regular participants in The Sovereign's Cup," she added.

This year welcomes previous Sovereign's Cup winner, Eamonn Rohan returning to defend his title on his Quarter tonner 'Anchor Challenge'. Also registered is previous Sovereign's Cup winner and team Captain of last year's victorious Rolex Commodore's Cup Team, Anthony O'Leary on his Ker 39 'Antix,' fresh from victory in Class 0 in the ICRA nationals last week in RCYC.

Kinsale Yacht Club's Corby 25 'Allure', owned by Brian Goggin won Class 2 and ICRA and is competing again this week in a very competitive Class 2 in the Sovereign's Cup.

Perhaps the main feature of this evening was the introduction of a the new trophy presented by Mrs. Caroline Dunne and the Dunne family in memory of the late, and much loved by all who knew her, Michelle Dunne. Michelle was a true stalwart of sailing in Kinsale and indeed throughout the country, was known to everyone, and was a huge supporter of and did trojan work for the RNLI.

Sadly she departed this life on April 5th, 2007 and left the Irish sailing fraternity in a state of shock and sadness. Now with the magnificent trophy to be known as the Michelle Dunne Prix d'Elegance trophy her memory will live on on at Kinsale Yacht Club in a wonderful manner. The trophy will not leave the club but an exact replica, in itself a beautiful trophy, will be awarded to the boat deemed by the judging committee to fulfill their criteria.

The gathering was also addressed by the President of the ISA, Niam McCutcheon and Regatta Director, Gary Horgan. Local dignatories in attendance included the Mayof Kinsale, Fred Treacy , Councillor Kevin Murphy, County Mayor and Councillor Dermot Collins. Also present was Hilary Creedon representing Fáilte Ireland who are supporting the event as are MGM Boats and local company O'Mahony Sailmakers who expect to be kept busy during the week.

Following refreshments served in the clubhouse competitors and other interested parties attended the first briefing of the week in the specially erected marquee in front of the club.
