Lecture: “Lady Nelson” Lost on the Skelligs

#LECTURES – In addition to the Killiney & Ballybrack Historical Society's hosting of a lecture about the "Lady Nelson" (on 14 Nov) recently reported on Afloat.ie, the talk will also be hosted this month by the Maritime Institute of Ireland (M.I.I.).

Jim Robinson will present the M.I.I. lecture on 15th November (8pm) about the vessel that traded between Dublin and Spain and in which was wrecked on the Skelligs Rock in 1809. The talk will also give an account of trading links with Spain during that time.

The lecture is to be held at the Stella Maris Seafarers Club, Beresford Place, close to the LUAS (Red) Line (Busaras Stop) and the DART stations (Connolly and Tara Street). Car parking is available at the Irish Life Mall on Lower Abbey Street.

Lecture: ‘French Naval Expeditions to Ireland’

# LECTURE-A lecture titled 'French Naval Expeditions to Ireland' presented by Edward Bourke is to take place tomorrow (17th Nov) at 8 p.m. at the Stella Maris Seafarers Club, Dublin. This is the second lecture of the Autumn /Winter series, which are organised by the Maritime Institute of Ireland (M.I.I.).

The Stella Maris Seafarers Club on Beresford Place (behind the Customs House) is where the lectures are usually held and on the third Thursday of each month. The club is between the Irish Life Mall car park (ILAC), the Customs House and Busaras. It is convenient to the LUAS (Busaras stop) and the DART (Tara Street station). Lecture: The Vasa-Fifty Years On

It's that time of the year again as the Maritime Institute of Ireland embark with their winter lecture series held in the Stella Maris Seafarers' Club, close to Busaras, Dublin city-centre.

The first talk will be about the Vasa, Fifty Years On, presented by Cormac Lowth. All are welcome to attend tomorrow (20 Oct) evening's talk which starts at 8pm. Vasa was built for King Gustav IV and on her maiden voyage in 1628 she heels over in the middle of Stockholm and sinks. The 64-gun warship was salvaged in 1961. Lecture: "Historical Diving in Ireland"

The Maritime Institute of Ireland (M.I.I.) hosts a Winter /Spring lecture series. The first lecture of the new year is 'Historical Diving in Ireland' by Dr Edward Bourke.

The lecture is on 20 January and starts at 8pm and is to be held in the Stella Maris Seafarers' Club, Beresford Place. The club is located beside Busaras and faces opposite the rear of the Customs House. Nearby is the Irish Life Center (ILAC) which is convenient for car-parking and buses, the 'Red' Luas (Busaras stop) and DART stops at Connolly /Tara St. stations.

All are welcome, bar and refreshments and a voluntary contribution is appreciated. Further lectures will be held throughout the winter, mostly on the third Thursday of each month and in the Stella Maris. Lecture on Kish Wreck Bolivar

The Maritime Institute of Ireland (M.I.I.) hosts a lecture series over the Autumn / Winter months. The first lecture of the season is next Thursday (16th September) and is entitled 'A Porthole From The Bolivar' about the wreck of the m.v. Bolivar on the Kish Bank by Cormac F. Louth.

The start procedure begins 8 minutes before the gun fires with the warning signal. If an IMOCA crosses the line too early, it incurs a penalty of 5 hours which they will have to complete on the course before the latitude 38 ° 40 N (just north of Lisbon latitude). For safety reasons, there is no opportunity to turn back and recross the line. A competitor who has not crossed the starting line 60 minutes after the signal will be considered as not starting.
