#dbsc – In a busy week for the country's biggest sailing club Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) launched its new committee vessel today, its annual Winter series enters its second week tomorrow and on Friday, in one of the biggest sailing nights of the year DBSC presents over 90 perpetual trophies at its annual prize-giving for 1,400 members. (See prizewinners listing below)

Today's launch of the club's second committee vessel marks a further commitment by DBSC to provide the very latest in equipment for the bay's 17 different classes totalling over 330 boats. At today's reception in the National Yacht Club incoming DBSC commodore Pat Shannon told a big turnout of waterfront sailors that 2013 would be a big year for DBSC.

The new vessel named Freebird of Dublin Bay was originally a shell-fishing vessel which has been completely renovated, complete with a new deckhouse to make it more or less like MacLir. It is all a modern committee boat should be. The engines, virtually unused when DBSC got them – they cannot have had more than 5-10 hours usage – are jet-driven, making it a very powerful vessel and capable of spinning on her own length.

For the record she is a 33 ft Stormcat catamaran, built originally at the Stormcat yard on the Isle of Islay with a beam of 15.5ft beam, , and having a freeboard of 2.5ft. She draws 1ft. 3 inches which makes her suitable for service in shoal waters. All her electronic equipment has been replaced with an up to date package, chart plotter, echo sounder, wind instrumentation and so on. The Baudoin 375 HP engines have Hamilton jet drives. Particular attention has been paid to the design of the anchor winch, which, as this year's experience shows, is critical for the manoeuvrability and flexibility of flagships during racing.

Brian Mathews and Jonathan O'Rourke who jointly oversaw the project. Graham Noonan, of Noonan's Boatyard in Kilcoole, did most of the work of adaptation; the new deckhouse was fabricated in Colchester by Koln Katz. Tony Browne installed the new electronic control system.

The club plan to divide the use of the new flagship between keelboats and dinghies. It will cater for Red Fleet keelboat on Thursdays and perhaps for the SB20s on Sundays and on the occasions when MacLir might not be available or as a particular need might arise. It will serve dinghies on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The older John T.Biggs committee vessel will be kept in reserve for the present.

MacLir, which has been in service since 2001, was out of service for nearly a month this year because of an engine problem. As the vessel operates in sometimes robust conditions these occasional problems are not unexpected.

#dbsc – After last weekend's baptism of fire in gusty conditions in the first race of the Viking Marine sponsored DBSC Turkey Shoot series new handicaps have been issued by the race organiser for Sunday's second race.

Over 70 boats have entered the series.

Four starts are planned and line ups are downloadable below as an excel sheet.

#dbsc – Noted quarter tonner Supernova, currently for sale, has won Dublin Bay Sailing Club's (DBSC) top award for handicap cruiser racing having won seven individual trophies in the 2012 DBSC season. The full DBSC prizewinners list for 2012 is below. Over ninety trophies will be awarded at one of Irish sailing's biggest nights of the year when DBSC's prizegiving takes place on the 16th November 2012 at the Royal St.George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire.

Among the awards to be made is one for a notable contribution to sailing and this year it will be made to Annalise Murphy for her Olympic performance in Weymouth.

In a note to members in DBSC's annual report outgoing Commodore Tony Fox makes a number of points about the Dublin Bay 2012 wind patterns, so critical in the enjoyment of our sailing, which were disconcerting in the extreme. On four successive Thursdays in May, racing had to be cancelled for lack of wind. On another two, the same happened because there was too much of it. There were another two Thursdays when racing was possible for the Blue fleet only. Boats racing on Tuesdays did note escape scot-free either. On four Tuesdays racing had to be cancelled, fog or thick, impenetrable mist being responsible on two occasions.

Yet looking back on 2012 we can remember there e were many days of splendid, exhilarating racing that made one forget the frustrations of early summer. As sailors we take the weather as it comes – sailing is all about adapting to wind and tide and it has never been otherwise. In 2007, "the worst summer on record" we were told, no less than eleven days racing had to be cancelled. What makes 2012 stand out is the fact that most of the cancellations happened on successive Thursdays, on the most popular racing day of the week. Oddly, there were no cancellations of Saturday races.

#dbsc – The new J109 Ruth has won the first race of Dublin Bay Sailing Club's (DBSC) popular Turkey Shoot series. The first race of the Viking Marine sponsored series was sailed last Sunday in a mix of conditions on a decidely grey day for a mixed cruiser fleet of over 40 boats. J109 sisterships Jedi and Jalapeno finished in second and third place in winds that reached. Full results attached as a word document below. 70 boats are entered in the series, up on last year.

#dbsc – While tomorrow's Dun Laoghaire lift out of boats at the National and the Royal St. George Yacht Clubs brings the main sailing season to an end Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) will be lifting-in its new Committee boat just in time for November's Viking Marine 'Turkey Shoot' series.

The new 33' flagship 'Freebird of Dublin' has been purchased with the club's own resources to serve both dinghy and keelboat fleets as a starting vessel.

Freebird has just been fitted with a new deckhouse by Noonan boats in Co. Wicklow. The jet driven catamaran is the second such craft for DBSC and replaces an older mononull.

There has been a buoyant take up for the Winter series from those still smarting at the loss of so much summer sailing. The 2012 season got off to a slow start when the first six DBSC Thursday races were lost due to an absence of wind.

#googleearth – Sailors with smartphones in their pockets can now get a birds eye review of their racing tactics thanks to Google Earth. That's what OK dinghy sailor Hugh Sheehy discovered last week in one of the final Dublin Bay Sailing Club races of the season.

Sheehy sailing in the handicap division against a variety of dinghies such as Finns, Lasers and radials included rival Paul Keane. Both Sheehy and Keane carried the smart phones afloat and were able to review their race afterwards.

The above youtube clip features the First leg of the second DBSC race. Keane's Laser track is in Red. The OK Dinghy in Green. It's not not clear why there's so much 'wobbling' in the OK Dinghy track, but we're sure its not tiller wagging!

The hope for the future, says Sheehy, is more sailors might carry smartphones out on to the water. Thanks to Google Earth's animated playback feature there'll be more chances to learn from your mistakes!
