Support for Gaza where the death toll of Palestinians has surpassed 38,100 will be highlighted by the south Galway community of Kinvara during next month’s Cruinniú na mBád regatta.
Kinvara has a long record of supporting the Palestinian people, and has planned a number of events over the summer, including during the Cruinniú na mBád festival.
The harbour will host the 45th annual gathering of Galway hookers next month from August 16th to 18th, weather permitting.
Tributes were paid to the community by the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland during her visit to Kinvara late last week.
Ambassador Dr Jilan Wahba Abadalmajid travelled to the south Galway village in one of her first public engagements since recognition by the Irish government of Palestine as a state.
Addressing a public meeting there last Thursday evening, she thanked the community and businesses of Kinvara for their support over many years.
Music at the event was provided by Kinvara singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke and the Sudanese violinist Kitty Sabry.
The ambassador also paid a visit to Kinvara farmers’ market on Friday morning.
The Kinvara harbour community began a boycott of Israeli goods in the summer of 2014 in protest over Israeli violence towards Gaza.
As part of its support for the BDS – Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions – movement, Kinvara residents removed Israeli goods from their shops and restaurants.
The then Palestinian ambassador to Ireland, Ahmed Abdelrazek, travelled to Kinvara to thank the community back then.
Since then, the village has held a series of events, including a candlelit vigil at Dungaire castle last November to mark the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“All the community in Kinvara have a special place in my heart”, the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland told the community group organising the event.
