Skerries Sailing Club in North County Dublin is offering a free Theory of Sailing Course this April.

This course is open to both members and non-members. It will take place at Skerries Sailing Club, Harbour Road, Skerries, County Dublin, each Thursday in April. The dates are April 3, 10, 17 and 24. Each session commences at 8 PM and will last two hours, including a refreshment break.

Apart from detailing how sailboats are propelled by the wind and controlled by their crew, the course will also cover weather, the tides, basic navigation, safety, plus the many different ways one can enjoy sailing, from competitive racing to relaxed daysailing or cruising. Weather (and daylight) permitting, a rigging tutorial may take place outdoors where you can learn how to hoist, lower and control a boat's sails..

The course is an ideal preparation for any on-the-water sailing course, including Just Sailing, the free sail training programme offered by Skerries Sailing Club to adult newcomers who can also avail of reduced cost membership in their first year.

As mentioned earlier, the April Theory course is free, and membership of the club is not required; however, you must pre-book your place by emailing the course administrator, Helen Ryan at [email protected]

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
