The world’s leading under-23 match racing sailors have been invited to the 59th Governor’s Cup in Newport Beach, California. The event runs from 27 July to 1 August and marks a shift to a new generation of competitors.
Three of the top-ranked youth skippers globally — Ethan Fong, Daniel Kemp and Josh Hyde — head the invite list. Four of the world’s top five under-23-ranked skippers will compete in the prestigious championship.
American hopeful Christian Prendergast, ranked 10th in the open world rankings, is among the leading contenders. He is joined by Morgan Pinckney, a three-time podium finisher at the event.
International entries include Sweden’s Theo Westerlind, Canada’s Andre Deseau and Denmark’s Victor Christian Melchior. Balboa Yacht Club will be represented by 17-year-old Siena Nichols, currently ranked sixth in the world.
Nichols, competing in her third Governor’s Cup, has already secured major wins, including the Mayor’s and Dickson Cups. “This was the toughest selection process in years and maybe ever,” said Christine Gribben, Governor’s Cup Chair. “We had more than 30 requests for invitations… and had to turn down some exceptional sailors,” she added.
Governor’s Cup trophy awaits next youth champion
The final place will go to the winner of the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in June.
The Governor’s Cup is the world’s oldest youth match racing championship and has produced leading international sailors, including America’s Cup winner James Spithill. Organisers say the 2026 edition will showcase the next wave of elite match racing talent.
