For anyone confused about VAT and customs status for boats in Northern Ireland after Brexit, the RYA has compiled a brief explainer on what’s changed, what we know so far and what boat owners should be aware of.

In short, there is still a lack of clarity regarding the customs status of boats in Northern Ireland.

In particular, the absence of paperwork — a not-uncommon situation where boats cross borders without formal interaction with customs — can prove a stumbling block when proof of status is required.
