Plans to redevelop Ballyholme Yacht Club on Belfast Lough into a major watersports centre have entered the formal planning process.
The application, LA06/2026/0450/F, has been lodged with Ards and North Down Borough Council following the project’s public unveiling in October 2025, as previously reported by Afloat.
The proposal seeks the demolition of the existing clubhouse and boathouse at Seacliff Road, Bangor, to be replaced by a new two-storey facility incorporating a clubhouse, café, event space, first-floor terrace and rooftop solar panels, along with a new boathouse and associated storage areas.
Marine Infrastructure Upgrade
Extensive marine and yard works form a central part of the application.
These include the resurfacing and widening of the main slipway, the closure and infilling of the northern slipway to create additional hardstanding, and the demolition and reconstruction of the existing finger jetty as a wider solid structure.
A new slipway is proposed to the north of the jetty, alongside underpinning works to the north boatyard wall and installation of rock armour protection along the northern and eastern boundaries.
Site Reconfiguration
The plans also provide for a reconfiguration of boat parking, relocation of vehicular and pedestrian access, and the creation of a landscaped courtyard within the site.
Additional elements include storage for kayaks and fuel, bin and battery stores, and alterations to existing ground levels.
Wider Public Access
The redevelopment is intended to broaden access beyond existing club use.
Plans include a publicly accessible café, event space and improved training facilities, alongside measures to support inclusive participation in watersports.
Participation Context
The timing of the application coincides with Afloat’s reporting this week on a major UK watersports participation survey, which identified access to facilities, affordability and confidence as key barriers to getting more people on the water.
The proposed Ballyholme development is intended to address many of those factors through improved infrastructure and wider public access.
Role in Bangor Waterfront
The project forms part of the wider Bangor Waterfront Programme and is described as having potential to support increased watersports activity and events in the area.
Planning Process Underway
The application was received by the council on 22 May 2026 and added to the public planning portal on 4 August 2026, with consultations now issued.
It will now be assessed by the planning authority and has not yet been approved.
