The Ballyholme Yacht Club (BYC) at Bangor on Belfast Lough in Northern Ireland is set for a major redevelopment, which has now been revealed to the public after an embargo period. The plans were presented at an information session on 11 October.

Located in Ballyholme, the BYC Watersports Centre is part of the Bangor Waterfront Redevelopment Masterplan, backed by the Belfast Region City Deal funding. This initiative aims to enhance tourism and regeneration in the region.

The club, known for its sheltered waters and for hosting various sailing events, offers numerous watersports, including kayaking and paddleboarding. The redevelopment aims to expand these offerings significantly.

Key benefits of the project include:

  • Community access through open days and courses
  • Improved inclusivity for people of all abilities
  • Enhanced health and wellbeing opportunities
  • New social spaces and a public café
  • Local economic growth through job creation and tourism

Sustainability is a priority in the design, which will feature low-energy solutions that enhance the coastal environment.

Ballyholme Yacht Club boasts decades of experience in hosting successful events and championships, not least the 2024 ILCA 6 Youth European Championships. The planned upgrades are expected to increase its capacity to attract both national and international visitors.

The redevelopment aims to create a lasting legacy for the borough, with promises of new jobs and business opportunities.
