Jacob Ziemkiewicz from Poland, whom I wrote about when he built his own 5.8 metre yacht, Bibi, at Aghada to compete in the solo Mini Globe Race 2024 sailed from Cork Harbour a fortnight ago to head for the race start. He is in Camarinas after a tough voyage across the Bay of Biscay where he encountered three days of storms.

Camarinas is a municipality in the province of A Coruña in the community of Galicia in North/West Spain.

"I lost my tracker, but Valentia Coast Guard picked me up and a spotter plane reported me safe"

"Me and my boat (Bibi) were tested," he told me by email, "We were pushed east for 80 nautical miles by steep waves and I lost my tracker, but Valentia Coast Guard picked me up and a spotter plane reported me safe as did a French yacht which relayed a message." He says he is now hoping to take Bibi by road trailer for the rest of the journey to the start line for the race which is scheduled at Marina de Lagos in Portugal in December.

"Lots of sailors are coming to visit Bibi and amazed with our journey," he writes.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
