An Irish solo sailor believes she’s broken the record for the longest distance sailed by a woman in a dinghy.

As New Zealand’s Northern Advocate reports, 58-year-old ILCA 6 sailor Fiona Heenan crossed the 600km mark of her designated route at Cape Karikari, in the far north of New Zealand’s North Island, about lunchtime local time on Friday (7 March).

That distance should be enough to claim the world record for the longest distance sailed by a woman in a sailing dinghy — pending verification by Guinness World Records adjudicators.

“It has not quite sunk in yet,” said Fiona, who has lived in Auckland for 30 years. “What an adventure.”
