Sail Melbourne 2025 closed on Sunday after wild squalls swept across Port Phillip, cutting short the final day for most classes.
Only the ILCA and iQFOiL fleets completed racing, capping a week that swung from flat calms to heavy breeze.
Matt Wearn, who has launched a campaign for a historic LA2028 three-peat, controlled the ILCA 7 from the outset in his first regatta since Marseille.
“It was nice to be back competing in the ILCA again,” Wearn said. “It feels nice to get back into that familiar environment and get the competitive juices going.”
The new Olympic finals format was trialled without issue.
The standout battle came from Ireland’s LA2028 triallists. Finn Lynch took third after holding his nerve in shifting conditions. Ewan McMahon followed in fifth, keeping pressure on throughout the series.
Their positions tightened the selection race, with Lynch finishing on 37 points and McMahon on 45 after the three-race finals.
Wearn sealed the win on 17 points, ahead of fellow Australian Zac Littlewood on 31.
