Eve McMahon leads the Irish Sailing Team into the Hyères Grand Slam following her gold medal win in Palma. The Dublin sailor produced a composed and clinical Medal Series performance earlier this month. She now returns to the water as one of the top sailors in the ILCA 6 fleet.
The second Sailing Grand Slam regatta begins in Hyères, France, on 20 April. It will feature nearly 600 sailors from more than 50 countries across all Olympic classes. McMahon faces a quick turnaround but will aim to carry momentum into the French event. Her Palma victory marked a strong start to the season.
In the ILCA 7 fleet, Finn Lynch returns to full fitness after illness disrupted his Palma campaign. He is joined by Ewan McMahon and Development Squad sailor Fiachra McDonnell. Ewan McMahon narrowly missed the Final Series in Palma and recorded a career-best result at this venue last year.
In the 49er class, Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove resume their campaign. The double Olympians target improved form ahead of May’s World Championships. They are joined by U23 European champions Ben O’Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain.
In the 49erFX fleet, Erin McIlwaine and Erin Barbour continue their development. The pair aim to build on a solid showing in Palma under coach Matt McGovern.
Irish Sailing Performance Director James O’Callaghan said the event is a key test. “It is an important team event for us as we test all our systems and have the full support team on site,” he said. “What we learn here will be reflected in our Olympic planning,” he added.
Racing runs until 25 April, with medal races deciding the final standings. The top ten boats in each class qualify for the Medal Series.
