A commitment to expand a naval reserve presence in Galway Harbour has been stopped short by the government, despite acknowledging that there is "merit" in the proposal.
In Dáil Éireann, Defence Minister Helen McEntee responded to a question from Galway West TD John Connolly (FF), who argued that the harbour should be considered for an expanded Naval Reserve unit.
The exchange took place in the Dáil during June, and the statement is the most recent government indication of the future of a potential naval reserve presence in the western city port (see related story).
"While a decision has not been taken yet, I believe there is merit in the proposal the Deputy is suggesting," said Minister McEntee.
The minister has confirmed that work is ongoing but has not committed to any location.
