Finn Lynch has gained an elusive Medal Race place in Tuesday's Men's Dinghy Class (ILCA 7) at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Lynch's Sunday climb into the top ten of the Men's Dinghy Class arrived in the nick of time, as both of Monday's races to determine the medal race contestants were cancelled due to a lack of wind in the Bay of Marseilles, leaving several favourites out, including France's own top-ranked Jean Baptiste Bernaz in 12th.
As a result, the National Yacht Club ace, competing in his second Olympic Games, enters his first medal race in tenth position, based on current standings.
His score-line means the best outcome he can hope for in the medal final is an eighth place.
"It was a long day on the water; unfortunately, we didn't get any racing so I'm a little bit sad that I couldn't fight one more day and try it a bit higher but (I'm) into the medal race so hopefully I end the regatta with my best race," said Lynch. "It would be great to end the regatta with a good race."
One of the first to congratulate Lynch is the ILCA Ireland Chairman, Sean Craig. "This is a great performance in the toughest one-design class in the world. The Medal Race for Finn is truly excellent, given that top guys like Buhl (GER) and Bernaz haven’t made the cut. As always, he finished really strong. I can’t wait to see him in the Medal Race final."
While the regatta is being dominated by Australian World Champion Matthew Wearn, the podium is by no means certain though on Sunday after racing Lynch appeared to rule himself out of medal stakes.
"I just want to sail well and finish the Olympics with my best day, hopefully tomorrow - that's my goal," he said.
Wearn is guaranteed either a silver or gold when he lines up in the Medal Race tomorrow.
Pavlos Kontides is the only sailor who can overtake him, but the Cypriot is not guaranteed a medal so will have to delicately manoeuvre the race tomorrow if he is to reach the podium. Meanwhile, Peru’s Stefano Peschiera remains third, ten points adrift of Kontides.
As with Monday, Tuesday also features light winds in the forecast so reserve days are also scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday to complete the event.
