Some special interest sailors and total cruising weirdos in Ireland may have said that the Sailing Olympics meant nothing to them, and that anyway it had become a Dublin thing. But when Annalise Murphy returned with her 2016 Silver Medal from Rio to a rapturous reception from a huge crowd at the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire in August 2016, every sailing and boating interest from every part of Ireland was well represented in the happy throng.
In the US, they've been facing up to a dearth of success in Olympic medals in recent years. So much so, in fact, that some of us have suggested it's grossly unfair that such an enormous country is allowed only one Olympic place in each class, as there are dozens of American states that are bigger - and each with a larger sailing population - than many Olympic medal-winning nations.
US BRONZE WIN RECEIVING EXTRA CELEBRATION
So when the US snatched the 49er Bronze from Ireland in the last race of the Sailing Olympiad 2024, the dejection in Ireland was far out-matched by the exultation in the US. And we're reminded of this with the publication of the short-list for the US Sailing Rolex "Sailors of the Year", which has - admittedly for alphabetical reasons - that Bronze Medal win right at the top for the overall win.
