Ireland's Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove remain firmly in contention after the opening day of Gold Fleet racing at the 49er Europeans Championship. The Irish crew sits sixth overall, level on points with Uruguay, as New Zealand's Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush moved into the overall lead.
Gold Fleet racing opened on Course C, where the world's leading skiff sailors faced light and tactical conditions. Menzies and Lee Rush delivered the day's standout performance with scores of 4, 1 and 2 to claim the yellow jersey.
The New Zealanders have built an impressive record despite racing a limited international programme. They competed only at the European and World Championships last season and returned solely for this year's Worlds, yet have already won two of those three events.
Fellow Kiwis Mattias Coutts and Oscar Gunn also enjoyed a strong day. Their scores of 8, 3 and 3 lifted them into third overall.
Britain's James Grummett and Rhos Hawes surrendered the overall lead but remain well placed to challenge for top spot when racing resumes.
The championship's scoring format ensures the title race remains wide open. Points are adjusted before the final day, meaning no crew can start Sunday with a lead greater than nine points.
Dickson and Waddilove are tied for sixth with Uruguay's Hernán Umpierre and Fernando Diz, the reigning Open European champions. Both crews remain well positioned to secure places in the Final Series.
Switzerland's Sébastien Schneiter and Arno de Planta, together with Norway's Mathias and Markus Berthet, currently occupy the remaining top-10 positions.
Spain's Martin and Jaime Wizner, Italy's Jan Pernarcic and Bruno Festo, Lorenzo Pezzilli and Tobia Torroni, plus Britain's Elliott Wells and Freddie Lonsdale, all face a battle to move inside the cut after mixed fortunes.
France's Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin remain inside the top 10 despite Fischer continuing to manage a wrist injury sustained in a start-line collision. The forecast for another light-air day presents a further challenge for the French crew.
With similar conditions expected, the fight for the overall title and Final Series places remains finely balanced ahead of another crucial day on the water.
