The 49er class has reaffirmed its reputation as a launchpad for elite sailors, spotlighting former junior champions leading the pack at the 2025 World Championship in Cagliari.
Six of the top eight crews after Day 1 were former Junior World Champions, illustrating a clear and repeatable pathway: from youth titles to Olympic podiums and professional racing circuits.
Spain’s Diego Botín and Florian Trittel — both with youth titles — lead the field. Following are France’s Erwann Fischer and Clément Pequin, then Sweden’s Marius Westerlind and Olle Aronsson. The list continues with top names from the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and Poland, all with junior titles in their past.
This progression highlights how investment in youth skiff sailing continues to deliver results at senior levels.
However, the class’s official performance recap press release could also have referenced Ireland’s Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove — a duo who exemplify that same developmental model.
Dickson and Waddilove were Under-23 World Champions in 2018 and represented Ireland at the Tokyo (finishing sixth) and Paris Olympics, where they finished fourth in the medal race at Paris 2024.
Ireland’s omission might not be a surprise given the top Irish boat in Cagliari was 35th. Still, the Irish record is notable given the small sailing country's commitment to skiff sailing and the success of its young athletes on the international stage, not least this month's gold medal at the U23 Europeans.
As the 49er class celebrates the strength of its developmental structure, a more inclusive reflection of the global pathway might better represent the full scope of nations contributing to the sport’s future.
