The IDRA 14 class has switched to a shoreside programme for the second day of its 80th anniversary celebrations at Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club today (Sunday, 27 September) because of the forecast for lively weather.
Saturday's opening day went ahead on the water, with the fleet completing a pursuit race followed by two sprint races.
Ronan O’Brien and Aibigael O’Brien, sailing IDRA 14/141 Shadowfax, won the pursuit race, with full results from the day's racing to follow.
Sunday Racing Cancelled
The class said on Saturday night that conditions forecast for Sunday meant there would be no further racing. The planned former sailors' race has also been cancelled.
Instead, the anniversary celebrations will continue ashore at Clontarf, beginning at noon with a display of boats and an IDRA 14 80th Anniversary exhibition booklet curated by Dan Kinlay.
Fireside chats with special guests from the class are scheduled from 1pm, recalling memories from the IDRA 14's long history.
The Harold's Cross Brass Band is due to perform at 4pm, followed by closing words and presentations.
An exhibition of IDRA 14 memorabilia and class artefacts is also on display, with visitors invited to sign an 80th birthday card.
Eight Decades of IDRA 14 Sailing
As Afloat reported in its preview of the anniversary weekend, the celebrations at Clontarf mark 80 years since the Irish Dinghy Racing Association 14ft One Design emerged in 1946.
The anniversary comes after the class's 2026 National Championship at Lough Erne Yacht Club, where Alan Carr and Orlaith Connolly won the title in Starfish following a three-way points tie.
