Kinsale Yacht Club Stage Laser Leinster Championships

#kinsale – Kinsale Yacht Club is a hive of activity this week ahead of the arrival of the Laser fleet for the Cantor Fitzgerald sponsored Laser Leinster Championships.

The Yacht Club are delighted that so many local boats have entered and will surely hope to be in the chocolates come Sunday evening, with future Olympic hopeful Darragh O'Sullivan amongst the favourites in the full rig whilst local yachting legend Ian Travers will be looking for the Masters win.

Regatta Director Matthias Hellstern commented "It has been many years since Kinsale Yacht Club hosted a major Laser championship and we are all really exciting to provide the class with a great event. We have lined up a superb OD in Jack Roy and we have no doubt the class will enjoy all that the club and town have to offer. The club is also delighted to welcome Cantor Fitzgerald, a Global name in the stockbroking and investment space as sponsors"

Cantor Fitzgerald's Daniel Murphy added "This is our first major sponsorship of a sailing event in Kinsale and we would like to wish all the participants an enjoyable stay in Kinsale and great sailing for the event. I will be on the water myself and look forward to seeing some of Ireland brightest sailing talents in action"

Sailing commences this Saturday the 25th of July and concludes on Sunday.

About the ILCA/Laser Dinghy

The ILCA, formerly known as the Laser, is the most produced boat in the world, with 220,000 units built since 1971.

It's easy to see why the single-handed dinghy has won the title of the most widely distributed boat of all time.

The Laser is a one-design dinghy, the hulls being identical but three rigs that can be used according to the size and weight of the sailor.

The class is international, with sailors from 120 countries. The boat has also been an Olympic class since 1996, being both the men's and women's singlehanded dinghy.

Three rigs are recognised by the International Laser Class Association (ILCA):

  • ILCA 4: sail of 4.70m2
  • ILCA 6: sail of 5.76 m2
  • ILCA 7: sail of 7.06 m2
