Day three of the Mermaid National Championship has seen a further two races and a crew's race completed as scheduled. This means six of the total eight races scheduled are now in the bag.
Tomorrow, Saturday, the 2nd of August, is the final day of the event with a final two races scheduled.
Day three brought very light and challenging conditions. It was especially shifty with positions and the leaderboard getting a big shake-up. Racing got underway bang on time (10.55 am), and it was almost an immediate jump into the starting sequence of the second race as the last boat crossed the line.
The 2025 Dublin Bay Mermaid National Championships are being contested in Wexford Harbour with the final two races on Saturday
The first race of the day saw 134 Jill, helmed by Paul Smith from the Royal Irish Yacht Club, take a commanding lead and defend it well to the finish. Second place went to 77 Tiller Girl from the National Yacht Club, helmed by Jonathan O'Rourke, and 3rd place went to 119 Three Chevrons, helmed by Vincent McCormack from Foynes Yacht Club.
77 Tiller Girl won the second race from the National Yacht Club helmed by Jonathan O'Rourke, whose overall strong performance has them lying in second place overall, just one point behind the leader. Second place went to 188 Innocence helmed by Darragh McCormack from Foynes Yacht Club, who now lies third overall, and third place in race six went to 123 Vee helmed by Jim Carthy from Rush Sailing Club.
Following the 2 Championship races, there was an optional 'Crews Race' with 11 boats taking part. This crew's race is a highlight of the Championship event, where one crew member from each boat takes the helm. With the usual helms swapping in crew positions, it can be very enlightening for all involved! The crew's race took an unusual course, taking the boats right into Wexford harbour. It was won by Noel McCormack, helming 188 Innocence from Foynes Yacht Club. Second place went to 187 Zuleika, and third place went to 77 Tiller Girl.
With the top three boats of the Championship now on net totals of 12, 13 and 14 points, it's all to play for tomorrow. Overall, it has been extremely tight, competitive racing with great socialising and activities off the water also. Friday evening also saw the Mermaiders host their 'Alternative Prize Giving night' to a packed house at the Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club.
