David Kenefick's Pink Panther strengthened its grip on the UK & Ireland National 18 Championships after six races at Royal Cork Yacht Club on Saturday, extending its overnight advantage despite another demanding day on Cork Harbour.
Three more races were completed to bring the championship to its halfway stage. Competitors encountered some of the toughest conditions of the regatta, with an 11 to 16-knot breeze carrying plenty of west in it and producing a short, steep sea that tested both crews and equipment.
Few sailors had a good word to say about the conditions, with the awkward chop making for physically demanding racing throughout the day.
Pink Panther remains the boat to beat on 12 nett points. Although David Kenefick's Royal Cork crew did not add another race victory, scores of 3, 5 and a discarded ninth-place finish were enough to preserve a three-point cushion thanks to their consistency across both days.
The biggest mover on the leaderboard was Peaky Blinders. Nick Walsh climbed from fourth overnight to second overall after posting the best series of results on Saturday, including a race win and a second place to move onto 15 points.
Nacho Nacho Man sits third on the same score, losing second place only on countback. Charles Dwyer's crew finished the day in style by winning the final race to remain firmly in contention for the title.
Aquadisiacs continued one of the quietest but most consistent regattas of the fleet to move into fourth overall on 18 points, while overnight runner-up Shotgunn slipped to fifth after an 11th-place finish in the final race became the discard.
Just six points separate second from fifth place, ensuring the battle behind Pink Panther remains wide open with up to six races still to sail.
Reigning Irish champions Howlin' Mad climbed to eighth overall after recovering steadily from their opening-day OCS penalty but still have significant ground to make up heading into the final two days.
Sunday's forecast could yet reshape the championship. WindGuru is predicting winds of up to 25 knots, and if conditions offshore prove too severe the race committee could opt to move racing into Cork Harbour, with the Eastern Bank off Cuskinny a possible alternative race area.
