More than 150 young sailors competed in the 2026 Munster Optimist Championships at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club in Dunmore East on 13–14 June. Competitors and their families enjoyed two days of varied racing conditions, excellent race management and a lively social programme hosted by the club.
Saturday brought sunshine, 15–20-knot winds and strong tides, providing a demanding test across the fleets.
The Senior and Junior Main Fleets completed four races, while the Regatta Racing fleet sailed three races outside the harbour. Fresh conditions proved particularly challenging for the Regatta Coached fleet, with many sailors returning ashore early, although those who completed all three races were rewarded for their determination.

The championship atmosphere continued ashore on Saturday evening with pizzas, a children's disco and a DJ on the clubhouse balcony.
Sunday's lighter easterly breeze, choppier seas and persistent tidal effects created a different tactical challenge. The Main Fleets completed two further races, the Regatta Racing fleet sailed another three races, and the Regatta Coached fleet finished an impressive eight-race series.
Maeve Donagh (RSGYC/LDYC) claimed the Senior Main Fleet Munster title ahead of Dylan O'Sullivan (RCYC), with Emily Donagh (RSGYC/LDYC) taking third. Local sailor Oscar Rowan (WHSC/RCYC) finished fourth, while George Creighton (MBSC/RCYC/BSC) completed the top five.
