The SB20 UK Class Association has paid tribute to Katie Jackson (née Ashworth), one of the driving forces behind the growth of the SB20 class, following her death after a battle with cancer. Katie played a pivotal role in developing the class from its origins as the Laser SB3 into one of the world's leading one-design keelboat fleets. Her work as Sailing Secretary at the Royal Southern Yacht Club and later as UK Class Secretary helped establish the class on the international stage.
SB20 UK Class Chairman Charlie Whelan said Katie's contribution to the class "cannot be understated". "She was instrumental in getting events and socials underway, welcoming and encouraging new members always with enthusiasm, charisma and that ever-present smile," he said.

Whelan recalled that Katie met her future husband, Guy Jackson, after he joined the class in 2009. "They subsequently married and had two beautiful children – Oscar and Bella. Life can be unbelievably cruel, and our hearts are all broken today... but we will always remember her wonderful laugh and that smile."
Katie helped secure World Sailing class status for the SB20 and oversaw a period of rapid expansion. During her tenure, Cowes Week fleets regularly exceeded 100 boats, the inaugural SB3 World Championship was launched, and the class established a strong international presence.
Tributes have poured in from across the global sailing community.
SB20 Class President Scott Glanville said: "Katie was instrumental in the establishment of the Class as a worldwide racing boat and held the role of Executive Secretary for almost 10 years. Our thoughts go to Guy, the children and family members in this difficult time."
Former SB20 World Council President Jerry Dowling highlighted Katie's impact on the class in Ireland. "I will never forget the huge contribution she made to make the SB3 (now SB20) inaugural World Championships in Dun Laoghaire a truly memorable event," he said.
Olympic gold medallist Pippa Kenton-Page also paid tribute, saying: "Such sad news, I'm so sorry to read this, my deepest condolences to her family."

Long-time SB20 sailor Pietro Negri wrote: "I was lucky to share so much with you. I've been lucky to be your friend. I still don't believe this is true. Will never forget you."
World champion Jerry Hill added: "Such a sad day... we will miss you, Katie."
Former class committee member Dave Cheyne credited Katie with the class's early success. "We would never have got to the dizzy heights we reached if it was not for Katie. Her joy for life and desire to make everyone happy was immeasurable. She was behind everything – such a truly beautiful person."
The association said Katie's warmth, enthusiasm and commitment helped create the welcoming culture that continues to define the SB20 fleet. She is survived by her husband Guy, their children Oscar and Bella, and her wider family.
The SB20 UK Class Association extended its condolences to her family and friends, concluding its tribute with the words: "Sail on, Katie. Fair winds and smooth seas."
