26 Water Wags turned out for the AIB DBSC race on Wednesday July 22nd on yet another sunny summer’s evening in Dun Laoghaire Harbour.
The Wags were racing for the Mollie Bowl (division 1A), the Alf Delany Hold Everythin' Trophy (division 1B), and the LDYC Decanter (division 2). As they do every week, the Wags were also racing for the coveted Jubilee Cup which is awarded to the overall winner for the season.
A N-NE wind of 4-6 knots in glorious sunshine greeted the competitors as they made their way from the clubs to the racing area. Race Officer Tadgh Donnelly set a 3-lap windward-leeward course, and after a brief postponement, got the fleet away. 2 boats were over-eager at the start and were OCS. No. 34, Kate Brown’s Chloe came back and started again, but unfortunately no. 40., Justin Geoghegan’s Swallow carried on.
First to the weather mark was Sean Craig sailing Puffin, followed by Geoghegan, and Cathy McAleavey sailing Mariposa, with John O’Driscoll sailing Moosmie in fourth place.
By lap 2 O’Driscoll had overtaken Geoghegan and McAleavey, with McAleavey in third. The top 3 maintained their places on lap 3, and Race Officer Donnelly decided to shorten the course at the leeward gate after lap 3 as the breeze was dying.
The Wag crews retired to the Royal Saint George Yacht Club for refreshments.
Top 3 finishers:
- Puffin (no. 52), Seán & Heather Craig
- Moosmie (no. 15), John O’Driscoll & Shirley Gilmore
- Mariposa (no. 45), Cathy McAleavey & Con Murphy
