With the Kish Race put to bed last Sunday, with twenty-four starters and finishers, the traditional end to the summer season in Dublin Bay is now consigned to history. The day racing keelboats of the Squibs, SB20s, Flying Fifteens and Dragons have temporarily departed to Lough Derg for their freshwater regatta, a chance to swill out their boats with fresh water after the summer (!) months of salt water and a short hiatus to the frenetic organisation of sailing in Dublin Bay can be enjoyed!

Not so! As I sit typing on my laptop, trying to get to the end of the working week, the mobile phone beside me starts bleeping – indicative of messages coming in over WhatsApp – the Entry Form and NoR for the Frostbites have been posted to the DMYC website with a suggestion that this has been done surreptitiously, without fanfare!

So, to avoid further hand-wringing and sleepless nights, let it be known, that the Viking Marine sponsored Frostbites for 2024/2025, hosted by Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club WILL commence on the first Sunday after Halloween, on 3rd November. Series 1 will run to the Sunday before Christmas, December 22. You have 20 days' notice!

As per normal, racing will commence at 14:00 on Sunday afternoons and fleet starts will ultimately be decided by the quantum of entries to the PY Fleet and the ILCA fleets respectively. Ideally, we would like to have as many entries as possible and to this end, entry fees have been kept very close to those of the preceding series, with a modest discounted entry if both series are entered.

Race formats will be as before and the normal hospitality of the DMYC will be in place for race post-mortems and daily prize-givings.

We are delighted to confirm that our major sponsor, Viking Marine, has come onboard again for the new series and we thank Ian O'Meara for his ongoing support.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
