An inquest into the death of Poolbeg sailing stalwart Johnny Wedick has heard he drowned after falling into the River Liffey while trying to access a boat after a social event.
As BreakingNews.ie reports, Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard on Tuesday (17 September) that the body of the 78-year-old was found on the morning of 19 November last, floating in the marina at Poolbeg Yacht & Boat Club — where he had served as commodore on a number of occasions.
Wedick had attended a private function in the clubhouse the previous evening to mark the club’s 50th anniversary, and it’s believed that he slipped and fell into the water while attempting to board his son John Jr’s boat which was moored in the club’s marina and where he had planned to stay the night.
A garda related to the court that CCTV footage showed Wedick entering the well-lit marina in the moments before the incident, and confirmed that he did not appear unsteady on his feet.
The coroner Dr Clare Keane returned a verdict of accidental death due to drowning. BreakingNews.ie has more on the story HERE.
