The literally global effect of the discovery of radio transmission by Italy's Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) is universally accepted. But the fact that his mother was a Jameson of the famous Irish whiskey family may not be so widely known, and even less familiar is that - thanks to these various linkups - the first-ever Marconi radio report of a sporting event's results was from the Royal St George Yacht Club Regatta on Dublin Bay on July 21-22nd 1898.
As Afloat reported earlier, these and other aspects of Marconi's multi-facetted life will be the topic of Dr Joe Varley's first DBOGA Talk of 2025 at the usual venue of Poolbeg Y&BC on Thursday, January 16th at 8.00 pm.
Guglielmo Marconi's contribution to world radio is the theme of a Dublin Bay Old Gaffers’ Association (DBOGA) talk this month
