Maritime art around Dublin Bay is the theme of a talk by historian Cormac Lowth at the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club (DMYC) this week.
As Lowth explains, several artists painted scenes of Dublin Bay from the 18th century, which helped to chart the development of Dublin Port.
These included Richard Bridges Beechey, Edwin Hayes, Alexander Williams and Matthew Kendrick, among others.
Lowth, who has been a scuba diver, was on the crew of the Galway hooker, Naomh Crónán, when it was based at Poolbeg Yacht Club in Ringsend.
He is a member of the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Association, the Maritime Institute of Ireland and the Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society.
He is the author of works including Ringsend Sailing Trawlers: With Some History of Boatbuilding in Ringsend, published by Peggy Bawn Press, with support from the Dublin Port Company.
His illustrated lecture takes place at the DMYC this Thursday, January 29th, at 8pm, and attendees are advised to arrive early to secure a seat.
