#flyingfifteen – On a balmy summer's evening Neil Colman & Mick Quinn in Flyer won the Flying Fifteen DBSC race last night comfortably in the end but they didn't have it all their own way as O'Sullivan with Ben Mulligan crewing lead for the first part of the race.

On what looked like a perfect evening for sailing it turned out to be challenging with the strong incoming tide and a shifty s-se wind. The question was whether to go inshore out of the tide or to stay out in the tide but pick up the stronger wind. Out worked and as the fleet approached Bullock mark those who stayed out lead the way including O'Sullivan, Colman and Dooley.

It was on to East mark and then Pier, at Pier the wind went soft, Colman closed the gap and on the beat up to Island mark took the lead which he held to the end to deservedly take the gun. Meanwhile Green had moved up to third and was neck and neck with O'Sullivan, a poor mark rounding ended the challenge and O'Sullivan was second with Green third. McCambridge was an excellent fourth followed by the O'Neills in fifth.

It was a great night's racing but it should be noted that there were a couple of close port and starboard incidents on the course- crews need to look more diligently and react in good time!
This weekend the fleet head to Dunmore East for the South Coast Championships.

#waterwag – Dublin Bay Sailing Club doyen Carmel Winkelmann officiated at the launch of the newest Water Wag dinghy, Mademoiselle, No. 46 on Sunday at the Royal Irish Yacht Club.

The new 12–foot clinker dinghy was built for Bay sailors Adam Winkelmann and Doug Smith. The boat was built in Skol Ar Mor, France.

The Water Wag is the oldest one design dinghy in existence, having been devised in 1886 and formalised as a one design class in Ireland in 1887. The design (last modified in 1900) is still sailed to this day on Dublin Bay and is one of the most popular dinghies sailed on the capital's waters recording some notable turnouts of late.

Immediately after the champagne launch ceremony, the Water Wag class held its annual picnic race (which has been running since 1887) with a pursuit down to Dalkey Island and back. An exciting race down to the Island with the end of the ebb tide. Mademoiselle led for most of the way but Mollie managed to overtake her coming into Dalkey sound, with David McFarland in third.

On the return home, No 1 Ethna sailed by Bill Nolan and Niamh Hooper led out of Dalkey sound, Moosmie had to go back as she was over the line but came steaming up the inside to take the win with Ethna 2nd and Mollie 3rd so taking the overall win!

The class thanks 'Thyme Out' and the Bretzel Bakery for sponsoring the fabulous lunch on Dalkey Island. Also our thanks to Brian and Anne Craig and Michael O'Leary for acting as mother ships, Dara, Caoimhe and Eddie Totterdell who had just got in from Greece at 4 in the morning from holidays and made it out drive a rib for us, also to Sandy Aplin who did a sterling job of ferrying us in an out of the Island.

#waterwags – On 10th June there was high pressure, hardly a cloud in the sky but unfortunately there was almost no wind. The Water Wags rowed, sculled and paddled to the race area in Dun Laoghaire Harbour. Despite the conditions twenty Water Wags lined up perfectly for the start. Initially the race was very slow. Then a breeze built up to about 5 knots from the north-east. Cathy MacAleavy in Mollie led the fleet heading towards the west pier lighthouse while Frank Guy in Gavotte led a smaller fleet heading towards the Boyd Memorial. As the fleet reached the windward mark off the east pier lighthouse they realized that there was a strong west-running tide. This caused some boats to underlay the windward mark. The rounding order was Mollie, Nandor, Tortoise. Pansy, The spinnaker run allowed the following boats to steel the wind from the boats ahead, but Mollie was so far ahead that she was untouchable.

By the second round the order was: Mollie, Ethna, Gavotte, Tortoise. Place changes were taking place partly due to the advantage in rounding the port side leeward mark.

On the final beat the wind disappeared again. Some of the leaders began to feel stress. Gavotte closed the gap between Mollie and the rest of the fleet. Tortise recovered the ground she had lost of the earlier rounds. Then a new wind appeared, at first gentle (about 2 knots) from the north and then it swung to the north west, and finally to the south west, allowing most of the fleet to fly spinnakers on the last beat.
