Kinsale Yacht Club's Winter League Concludes with Valfreya Success

David Riome’s Sigma 33, Valfreya, which was chosen Cruiser Whitesail Boat of the Year at Kinsale Yacht Club's laying-up was just edged out of first place in ECHO handicap and finished third in IRC the Winter cruiser league at Kinsale Yacht Club, which concluded on Sunday.

Stephen Lysaght’s Reavra Too and Patrick Beckett’s Miss Charlie were top boats of the October-November cruiser series

After a seven-race whitesail Victoria Antiques-sponsored series for two fleets, Reavra Too led IRC and ECHO Class 1, winning five of the races under IRC handicap for a total of 5 points. The Carroll Brothers sailing Chancer, won the other two races and finished on 12 points. Valfreya, was third on 13 points. Under ECHO handicap Reavra Too just edged out Valfreya for first place, with Cirrus (Mathilde Dingemens/ Gerard Campbell) in third place.

In Fleet 2 IRC there were five entries with Patrick Beckett’s Miss Charlie topping the fleet on five points and also winning under ECHO handicap, just edging out Martin Hargrove’s Deboah in a tie-breaker. Both finished on 11 points overall. Padraig O’Donovan’s Chameleon was third in ECHO and in IRC, where Jakub Belica’s Guinness Kahn was second. There were ten entries under ECHO handicap.

The next cruiser event at KYC will be the annual Gunsmoke Bell race starting at 1.30 p.m. on St.Stephen’s Day.

  • KYC’s ‘Boat of the Year Awards’ at the annual laying-up supper were:
  • Squib Class Boat of the Year - Flora, Bobby Nash and Una Leader;
  • Dragon Class - TBD James Matthews, David Good and Fergal O’Hanlon;
  • Cruiser White Sail - Valfreya David Riome;
  • Cruiser/Spinnakers - Artful Dodjer Finbarr O’Regan
  • Seamanship Award - Brian Jolly for solo Round Ireland cruise in his 29-foot Pukapuka;
  • Crusing Log Award - Privateer, Dermot and Mary Lanigan for voyage from Henan in Sweden via Kiel Canal to Kinsale;
  • KYC Person of the Year – Wave Sculpture Award - Bernadette Walsh, Sailability Group Class Secretary.

On Thursday, November 27, the club will hear a talk on the use of electronic safety equipment in MOB (Man Overboard) situations, delivered by CH Marine staff at 7.45 pm.

Kinsale Yacht Club located in Kinsale, County Cork lies just 120 nautical miles from Wales, 240 from North West France and only 500 from the Galician Coast of North Spain.

Kinsale Yacht Club is only a few minutes walk from every shop, hotel, pub and restaurant in Ireland’s gourmet capital but most significantly it is only 30 km by road from Cork, Ireland’s second city, and between the two lies one the region’s main assets - Cork International Airport - with its daily links to many European capitals.

Club members, of which there are more than 600, race Cruisers, One Design Keelboats and Dinghies.

The club runs inshore and offshore races, has an active cruising scene, a powerboat section and most significantly for any real club, a strong and dynamic junior training programme.

Beyond the club’s own marina is the club house itself and the dinghy park. Within the clubhouse are changing rooms, bar and restaurant all with full wheelchair access. The club’s full-time secretariat, steward and marina manager are there to look after sailing visitors and members alike in a relaxed, informal and fun environment.

The club welcomes new members and has always got room on its members’ yachts for new comers to the sport.
