Royal Cork's Wildcard, helmed by Trinity College student Harry Twomey with crew Harry Durcan, William Twomey, Seafra Guilfoyle, and Andrew Conan, claimed victory as they came first Corinthian at the first event of the Italian J/70 Cup this weekend.
The event, held on the waters around Yacht Club Livorno from May 2 to 4, saw fierce battles among top-tier crews, including the current Corinthian World Champions, but it was the Wildcards' exceptional performance that stole the show this weekend.
Fast sailing at the Italian J/70 Cup at Livorno
The fleet drew an epic line-up of teams from around New Zealand, Italy, Turkey, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. Over the course of the three days, sailors faced varying wind conditions, making for an exhilarating contest.

The Wildcard team from Royal Cork Yacht Club's crew scorecard included three top 10s in the seven-race series.
Speaking about their experience, helm Harry Twomey said, “The win is a testament to the skill of the entire team. We are delighted to kick off the J/70 series on such a high note and grateful to sail against such talented sailors.”
Team Wildcard will then travel to Lake Garda at the end of May for the next championship in the Italian J/70 series.
Twomey came to this event fresh from winning the student yachting nationals in April. Twomey was at the helm of the Trinity College J/80 that won the event. He was also a helm on the TCD team that won the varsities in March.
The overall J/70 event was won by New Zealand team Callisto, silver went to Turkish team Denizcik and bronze went to Italian team Jcurve. Team Wildcard finished ninth overall.
