Although fleet numbers remain modest in Royal Cork Yacht Club’s May League Saturday series, the range of cruiser-racer designs now competing in Cork Harbour continues to widen.
The latest arrival is the FarEast 28R Resolute, which made its Crosshaven debut on Saturday with four time Olympian Mark Mansfield on the helm and co-owned with Jon McClean.
The modern Simonis Voogd-designed sportsboat joins an increasingly varied local fleet where traditional IOR-era designs race alongside newer lightweight performance cruiser-racers and offshore-focused designs.
Among the boats competing in the opening stages of the May League are ICRA's ECHO Boat of the Year Pat Tanner’s Castro 3/4 Tonner Bateleur '88, John and Ronan Downing’s Half Tonner Miss Whiplash, Simon Coveney’s Corby 34.7 Waterfront, Ria Lyden’s X332 Ellida, Daragh McCarthy’s Sun Fast 3200 Mach 2 and Frank Caul and John Molloy’s Grand Soleil 37 Prince of Tides.

The arrival of the FarEast 28R adds another contemporary design to the mix.
With twin rudders, broad stern sections and a powerful square-top rig, the FarEast 28R represents a newer generation of compact high-performance racer-cruisers now appearing more regularly in Irish club racing.
As Afloat reported in 2022, Cork Harbour has increasingly become a stronghold for competitive cruiser-racers in the 25 to 30-foot bracket, where manageable crew numbers and lower running costs continue to appeal to owners.
The current fleet makeup underlines how broad that spectrum has become, ranging from older Quarter Ton and Half Ton era boats to modern lightweight sportsboats and offshore-oriented racer-cruisers.
Early May League racing also produced varied results across IRC and ECHO divisions.
Simon Coveney’s Waterfront leads the Spinnaker IRC standings after the opening races, while Eric Lisson’s Holly Blue heads both Non-Spinnaker divisions.
Results from Saturday’s May 16 racing were not available at the time of writing.
